Today In History: Azumah Nelson drew with Jeff Fenech in 1991 to retained his WBC World super Featherweight title [ + Video]
On this day, 28 June 1991 ( a exactly 31 years today), Legendary Azumah Nelson drew with Australia’s Jeff Fenech in Las Vegas, Nevada to retained his WBC World Super Featherweight title.
What a great fight this was.
27 year old Jeff Fenech had already won world title belts at bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight, and was looking to add 32 year old Azumah Nelson’s super featherweight belt to his collection.
Nelson started fast, but got worn down by Fenech’s signature swarming attacks and dogged perseverance. The fight looked close to being stopped in final round.

The judges saw it this way >>>
Jerry Roth 115-113 for Fenech
Dave Moretti 114-114
Miguel Donate 112-116 for Nelson
The drawn decision was controversial. Most thought Fenech had done enough to get the nod and add a world title in a 4th weight division. Not to be.
