The Security Service Sports Association (SESSA) Games, established in 1987, were relaunched today, Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the University of Ghana Sports Directorate Conference Hall. The SESSA Games, previously organized among Ghana’s security services, were halted for a decade due to unforeseen circumstances.

Historically, the SESSA Games have unearthed exceptional sporting talents, fostering excellent performances in Ghana’s national teams at both national and international levels.

This year’s SESSA Athletics Open Championship is scheduled to take place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium from November 2-3, 2024.

Participating teams include the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and Customs.

At the launch, Acting National Sports Authority/NSA Board Chairman Seth Panwum Boyoyo stated, “I’m honored to be here, promoting sports excellence among security professionals and youth development, aligning with the government’s policy to maintain a healthy nation through support for sporting activities. We build upon our legacy, fostering discipline and hard work, and our athletes will benefit from the National Sports Authority and Ghana as a whole.”

The Ghana Athletics President Bawah Fuseini stated, “This program is not reviving but kick-starting the SESSA Athletic Championship. SESSA has been dormant for over a decade, and we feel it’s essential to take action. Thankfully, we have the backing of the Director of Training and PTA of the Ghana Armed Forces; this is their brainchild, and we’ve all bought into the idea that no matter how small it starts, we must begin, and hopefully, the major stakeholders will see our progress and offer support.”

Col. Richard Akoto, Director of Physical Training and Sports, Ghana Armed Forces, expressed gratitude to Ghana Athletics: “On behalf of the Security services, we thank Ghana Athletics for organizing this event and offering support. We’re delighted to be part of this launch. Our high commanders in various security forces are keenly interested in sports. In past years, we’ve focused on nurturing young talent, ultimately benefiting the National Sports Authority. We requested opportunities for these young athletes to compete, especially in athletics, which lacks leagues unlike other games. I was thrilled when Mr. Bawah agreed to help.”

The 2IC for the Ghana Immigration Service Sports Unit, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI) Andrew Asamoah Asante expressed enthusiasm, saying, “It’s a great idea, especially through athletics. We’re well-prepared, having participated in Ghana Athletics competitions. The SESSA Games will benefit my officers, boosting morale.”
