Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah has described his side’s 2-0 win over Ghana as unfortunate on the path of the Black Stars after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying (AFCON) game.

Appiah picked up four points from Ghana during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, with Sudan beating Ghana 2-0 in the second game of the doubleheader on Tuesday, after a goalless game in the first tie last Thursday.

On a day which marked 18 months since civil war broke out in Sudan, Ahmed Hamed Mahmoud opened the scoring after the hour mark for the hosts, before Mohamed Abdelrahman sealed the points for the Falcons of Appiah, who managed the Black Stars in two different stints, sympathized with his former employers after the game.

It’s unfortunate for Ghana. Ghana has a good team but it’s unfortunate that only one of us can go through. I’m happy we’ve been able to put a smile on Sudanese faces,” he said in his post-game presser.

With this victory, Sudan now has seven points after four games, while Ghana remains in third place in Group F with just two points. Angola currently leads the group with 12 points.
