Ghana’s Embassy in Egypt is demanding the over $330,000 owed them by the Ministry of Youth and Sports for pre-financing the accommodation of fans flown to the North African country for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to JoySports, The Sports Ministry had in 2019 revealed that $1,43 5,190 was spent on accommodation during Ghana’s AFCON 2019 campaign.
But, the Embassy is demanding $332,000 from the Ministry for financing their stay of some supporters in the country.
Reports suggest that the current Sports Ministry is unaware of the debt as there was no proper disclosure of the expenditure of the team in the handing over notes presented by former minister Isaac Asiamah.
The Ministry says it will audit the accounts before deciding whether to pay the supposed debt or not with sources saying that the ministry has a debt of GHC 20 million.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) gave the GFA about $600,000 for the country’s preparation and participation in the tournament yet the Sports Ministry, in September of that year wrote to the association demanding 50% of the money with the leadership of Dr. Kofi Amoah reimbursing $300,000 to the Ministry as requested.
The Ministry then directed the GFA to use the rest of the money to pay clubs that participated in the NC Special competitions.
