Africa Athletics Championships: Ghana shock Nigeria to Win the Gold Medal in the Men’s 4×100 relay
Ghana’s men 4x100m relay team made history today at the ongoing Africa Athletics Championship in Cameroon, beating Nigeria to win the gold medal in a thrilling final.
The Ghanaian team, comprising Ibrahim Fuseini, Isaac Botsio, Edwin Gadayi, and Abdul Rasheed Saminu, clocked a time of 38.63 seconds to take the top spot on the podium. Nigeria followed closely behind, finishing second with a time of 38.84 seconds.
The win was a sweet revenge and double victory for Ghana, who had lost to Nigeria in the men’s 4x100m relay final at the African Games in Accra earlier this year but beat them later in the World Relays in Bahamas. The Ghanaian team was determined to make amends, and they did just that with a stunning performance.
The race was intense from the start, with both teams neck and neck until the final stretch. But it was Ghana’s anchor leg, Abdul Rasheed, who made the difference, pulling ahead of Nigeria’s anchor leg to secure the win.
The crowd erupted in cheers as the Ghanaian team celebrated their victory, hugging each other and waving their country’s flag. It was a moment of pure joy and pride for the team, who had worked tirelessly to achieve this feat.
Ghana’s win was not the only highlight of the day. The female relay team also with an outstanding performance won silver in placing second to Nigeria and Liberia.
The quartet made up of Mary Boakye, Haluti Hor, Anita Afrifa and Deborah Acheampong were fired up seeking an Olympic qualification thus running an impressive and season’s best of 43:62 seconds.
Rose Yeboah, defending champion and African Games champion, won gold in the high jump event on Sunday, clearing a height of 1.87 meters to take the top spot.
Ghana’s medal tally now is two golds and 1 silvers. The team is determined to add more medals to their collection before the championship comes to an end.
This victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Ghanaian athletes, and it has sent a strong message to their competitors that they are a force to be reckoned with.
