Members of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 2023 African Games on Wednesday March 24, 2021 met online (E) Sports Journalists at Accra Sports Stadium Media Center to update them on activities and mandate given to them ahead of the continental showdown.
The nine- Member Committee was inaugurated by the President of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo in October last year and charged with the mandate of delivering the 13th All African Games.
“With our mandate to organize the Games, we can’t do it without the Online Sports Media in the country that is why we gathered here today to brief you on our mandate” Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare Chairman of the LOC said.
Firstly, our mandate is to host and organize the Africa Games and after the hosting of the games, we are to transform the facilities into a University and this University will be a University of Sports Development.
We are to take care of material preparations and we are to take care of organizing all the sporting events. We are to organize culture events and all that and the Africa Union (AU) mandate us to use the games for African sports movement and by that Promoting the ideal of Peace, Unity, Excellent, Olympism, Olympism in sports, when we talk about that, we are looking at the Values of the Olympism and the values are Excellence, friendship and respect. They want us to the Africa Games as unifying tool for African.
We are going to build 50, 000- capacity stadium, multi-purpose Olympic at Borteyman which will be use to host the Games.
Our second mandate is to convert the facility (The Olympic Stadium) into a University for Development after the successful hosting of the Games”, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare Chairman of the LOC concluded.
Present were other members of the LOC, Vice Chairman Reks Brobbey a former Olympian and an accomplished sports event organizer, consultant Dr. Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the LOC who led Team Ghana, Sports journalist Dan Kweku Yeboah and Miss Joyce Datsa, a Sports Administrator.
The rest are: Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Dwumfour Williams, a Clinical Psychologist and a University Lecturer and a Board Member of the National Sports Authority (NSA), and Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC).
The 13th edition of the African Games, formerly known as the All Africa Games, would involve 54 participating countries and 25 sporting disciplines.
The 2023 Africa Games will also serve as qualifier for the various disciplines for the 2024 Olympics Games in Paris, France.
