Uganda Women’s and Men’s Rugby teams have clinched the maiden gold medals in Rugby 7s at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana.
Uganda Women have won the first-ever gold medal in Rugby 7s at the African Games. This was after going unbeaten in four matches during the 13th edition of the games at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra Ghana.
Lydia Namabiro, Grace Auma (2), Peace Lekuru, and Grace Nabaggala put their names on the scoreboard for the tries. Maimuna Nassozi was impressive off the boot by kicking two conversions.
The women’s triumph takes Uganda’s gold medal tally to three at the 13th African Games.
Meanwhile, the Men’s team trumped Benin 56-00, courtesy of tries from Denis Etwau (3), Aaron Afoyrwoth (2) and one apiece from Phillip Wokorach, Alex Aturinda, Nobert Okeny, Desire Ayera and Timothy Kisiga.
The two make it four gold medals so far for Uganda in the 13th edition of the continental event.
Initially, badminton stars Husina Kobugabe and Gladys Mbabazi scooped gold in women’s doubles for the first.
In total, Uganda has, so far, garnered 15, medals, including 5 silver and 6 bronze medals.
