On August 31, 2023, at approximately 2:00 PM, an incident involving the unauthorized removal of a banner occurred at Tetegu. The banner, belonging to an individual known as Lawyer Jerry Ahmed Shaib (JAS), was reportedly pulled down by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Weija-Gbawe, Hon. Patrick Kumor, along with his task force and a group of young men.

This was done on the orders of the Member of Parliament for the Weija-Gbawe Constituency, Hon. Tina Gifty Mensah, who is the MCE’s boss and mentor.

The action was allegedly motivated by Lawyer Jerry Ahmed Shaib’s intension to contest for the Parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NPP.

The MCE’s boss, the current Member of Parliament, Hon. Tina Mensah, hasn’t taken intension of the lawyer kindly.
The banner, which had been prominently displayed and situated in the Tetegu area had an image of Lawyer Jerry Ahmed Shaib with the inscription, JAS COMETH.

This incident, which is the third time that images of JAS have been removed, has raised concerns regarding the misuse of authority and the violation of individuals’ rights to express their support for various causes.
The removal of the banner by the MCE and his task force, ostensibly due to the competitive situation between Jas and the MCE’s boss, underscores the need for fair play and adherence to ethical practices in electoral competitions.

The community members and witnesses present during the incident expressed shock and disapproval, calling for accountability and transparency in the actions of local authorities.

In the light of this incident, it is recommended that a thorough investigation be conducted to ascertain the facts surrounding the removal of the banner.

Additionally, measures should be taken to ensure that political rivalries do not lead to the suppression of freedom of expression and interference with citizens’ rights to display their support for their preferred candidates or causes. Such incidents undermine the democratic process and erode public trust in local governance.
