Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Jordan Opoku has commenced his coaching course with Ghana Premier League outfit West Africa Football Academy (WAFA).
The midfield linchpin affectionately called ‘River Jordan’ returns to his old stomping grounds to cut his teeth as he begins a new chapter in what has been a glorious playing career.
Jordan, first came to prominence on the local scene with the Porcupine Warriors in the 2006-2007 season after he had returned from a loan spell in Belgium with Royal Antwerp from his mother club, Feyenoord Rotterdam.
He helped Asante Kotoko clinch the 2007-2008 Ghana Premier League as coach Bashir Hayford bullied the rest of the clubs into submission with their style and panache with the midfield combo of Jordan Opoku and Daniel Nii Adjei playing a crucial role in that triumphant squad.
Jordan Opoku days at Berekum Chelsea
When he was tagged ‘old duade’ (veteran) by critics he rolled back the years after moving to Berekum Chelsea, where he starred in midfield in Chelsea’s one and only league title before outclassing Raja Casablanca to reach the group stages of the CAF Champions League – the last Ghanaian club to reach that level on the continent.
The multiple league winner had stints outside the shores of Ghana before returning to Kotoko in two separate spells and later Berekum Chelsea before winding up his playing career.
It comes as little to no surprise Jordan has joined a growing list of ex-footballers metamorphosing into coaches, considering his immense level of intelligence displayed on the field of play Opoku will make a brilliant tactician.
He is currently with the Junior side of WAFA and sooner than later he will be handling clubs at the top level.
