Ghana Football Awards Honours Former Black Queens Player with Living Legend Award
Grace Adjoa Bayor was honoured with a Living Legend Award at the 2024 Ghana Football Awards for her enormous contribution to Ghanaian football. The event was held on Saturday, June 29th, at the Accra International Conference Center.
A citation read for Adjoa Bayor said, “Congratulations to Adjoa Bayor for winning the prestigious Living Legend Award at this year’s Ghana Football Awards! With a career spanning over two decades, Adjoa Bayor has not only dazzled us with her skill and dedication on the pitch but has also inspired countless young athletes across Ghana and beyond. Her extraordinary achievements and relentless passion for the game have solidified her place as a true icon in Ghanaian football history. Thank you, Adjoa Bayor, for your incredible contributions and for being a beacon of excellence and inspiration.”
Bayor’s international career highlights include her participation in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup in the United States, where she represented the Ghana women’s national football team with distinction. She showcased her talent on both local and international stages throughout her career, playing for Ghatel Ladies and Immigration FC in Accra, Ghana, and gaining experience abroad with FC Indiana in the United States.
Adjoa Bayor was part of the Ghana Immigration Ladies Football team who secured their first qualification into the National Women’s League (NWL) in 2012. Her remarkable abilities were acknowledged when she joined FF USV Jena on January 21, 2009.
One of Bayor’s standout moments came during the 2007 World Cup in China, where she captained the Ghana national team. Despite Ghana not progressing beyond the group stage, Bayor left an indelible mark by scoring a memorable goal from a free kick against Norway, displaying exceptional skill and creativity.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions, CAF honoured Adjoa Bayor as the African Women Footballer of the Year in 2003. She remained a prominent figure in subsequent years, receiving nominations for the prestigious award in 2004 and 2006.
Adjoa Bayor’s legacy in Ghanaian football continues to inspire future generations of players, and her impact on the sport remains an integral part of football history in Ghana and beyond.
