Ghana Rugby Eagles women qualify for the finals stages of qualifying for the Olympics Games in Tunisia
Ghana Rugby Eagles women have qualified to the qualification series of the 2024 Olympic qualification after coming the second runner up in the just Rugby Africa pre Olympic qualifiers in Zambia.
Team Ghana traveled with 14 contingent, 11 players namely Anita Halm, Nimatu Haruna, Barikisu A. Mumuni, Racheal Dede N. Tawiah, Radha Arthur, Dorothy Owusu Ansah, Victoria Atta, Crystal Monique Cooke, Sandra Siawaa Odame, Jamila Awal and 3 technical officials namely head coach lovemore Kuzorera, Jeffery Chiwanda Asst. coach and Rafatu Inusah as the team manager and leader of delegation.
The competition was made up of 10 teams and splits in group A and B. Ghana was in group B alongside with Burkina Faso, Cote D’Ivoire, Zimbabwe and RD Congo and Zambia, Senegal, Egypt , Mauritius and Algeria where In group A.
Ghana Eagles struggled with the weather condition but secured to top up in group A after beating the teams in the group and Zambia top up in group B which made the two teams meeting in the final match.
Before the final match against Zambia, No. 4 of the Ghana team was sited with HIA by the tournament doctor after she was swinged by the opponent and fell on the head which ended her chance to play in the finals as it’s important to check the safety of the players. Team Ghana ended up with 10 players out of 12 to compete in the finals.
The Eagles Captain Paulina Yaa Mensah and others where injured in the previous matches and had no backups in the final games which lead to the defeat to Zambia.
Despite the loss, Ghana, Zimbabwe and Zambia teams had already secured a spot in Tunisia for the the final stages of qualifying for the Olympics Games.
The winner is guaranteed a place at the 2024 Olympics Games in Paris.While the second and the third placed teams progress to the 2024 Final Olympics Qualifications Tournament.
