The Ghana Table Tennis Association has fulfilled its scholarship promise it made in July 2021 to promising female cadet players in the country to boost female participation in table tennis in Ghana.
At the ITTF West Africa regional Table Tennis Championships held in April 2023 at the Trust Sports Emporium in Accra, the expanded scholarship program saw the inclusion of male SWAG Table Tennis discovery of the year 2022 Israel Akli being added to the list of recipients.
Five female players and one male namely Emmanuella Yaa Kyere, Juanita Borteye, Jessica Droh, Clara Arhin, Naomi Arhin and male prodigy Israel Akli were all excited to receive an annual scholarship award of 2000gh. This scholarship will be reviewed annually based on their academic performance, discipline, and dedication to playing table tennis.
Addressing the gathering at the opening ceremony of the ITTF West Africa tournament, President of Ghana Table Tennis Association Mawuko Afadzinu advised the recipients to be more disciplined and focused on their academic development. He urged them to continue working hard in their skills development in table tennis and to inspire others with their achievement.
‘’As part of the Association’s plan to develop the next generation of stars, both males and females for the nation, there is a core mandate to support these players to develop in their academics as well table tennis abilities. These kids are also being given the opportunity to play for the various national teams to acquire experience at a tender age’’ Mawuko Afadzinu.
