As part of the 2019 ITF Wheelchair Tennis Development Fund Project awarded to Ghana Wheelchair Tennis, which is a subsidiary of Ghana Tennis Federation, ten multipurpose sports wheelchairs were donated to Ghana Tennis Federation to support the development of wheelchair tennis in Ghana.
Wheelchair tennis is currently played in nine regions out of sixteen regions in Ghana with almost eighty players who have about eighteen sports wheelchairs with some not in good condition.
So the ten new soorts wheelchairs, thus six medium and four small sized tennis wheelchairs is going help professional Ghana wheelchair tennis players get wheelchairs that they can use for tournaments and also support our junior wheelchair tennis players.
On 22nd October 2020, the GTF Board together with the GTF Wheelchair Tennis Committee presented the ten ITF donated sports wheelchairs to Greater Accra Region (4), Eastern Region (1), Ashanti Region (1), Western Region (1), Bono Region (1), St Theresa Vocational School for the Physically Disabled, Abor Volta Region (1) and Central Region (1) and 2 used sports wheelchairs.
Henry Larbi informed the wheelchair tennis stakeholders that ITF has informed Ghana Wheelchair Tennis that due to the effect of the covid 19 pandemic, all 2020 ITF Wheelchair Tennis Funds has been cancelled and so will really affect implementation of wheelchair tennis developmental projects in Ghana.
Mr Kwame Djangba, Chairman of GTF Wheelchair Tennis Committee called on Government and Corporate Bodies to support the development and promotion of wheelchair tennis in Ghana.
