Match Report: Karela United 0-2 Kotoko: Asante Kotoko End Karela’s 5- year Unbeaten Records At Anyinase
Asante Kotoko on Sunday broke the 5-year indomitable home record of Karela United to move to the top of the Premier League table for the first time after 13 matches.
Left back Moro Ibrahim and Kwame Opoku scored in each half of the game to give the Porcupine Warriors a two zero win at the Crosby Awuah Memorial park at Aiyinasie. Prior to Sunday afternoon’s defeat, Karela United had enjoyed 64 competitive games without defeat dating back to February 2016.
The home side began the game on a strong footing with some combination passes trying to create openings but everything came to nought as they wasted the few opportunities that came their way.
The Porcupine Warriors grew into the game with a modest approach and took the home side by surprise with a Moro Ibrahim opener in the 37th minute to silence the home fans who came into the game brimming with confidence.
Kotoko top scorer Kwame Opoku was the creator as he latched onto a ball in the Karela area before laying to Moro to fire home.
Ibrahim Moro’s initial shot was blocked but he followed up with a second attempt from the edge of the box to register the first goal of the match. The Reds went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
Back from recess, Kotoko took charge of the game pressing for the second goal. That attacking football paid off inside 62 minutes when Kwame Opoku hit a hard one pass Karela goalkeeper Richard Abaidoo to register his 7th goal of the season.
Karela United put up a good fight after the second goal and created some goal scoring chances but the wastefulness of Kwame Boateng and Diawusie Taylor did them harm as Asante Kotoko held on to register their third away win of the season.
Asante Kotoko now move up to the first spot in the standings with 23 points, one more than Karela United who now drop to second after 13 matches.
