NCF T20 Invitation Tournament: Ghana in shock upset after losing to Rwanda in the Opening Game

The National women’s Cricket team of Ghana lost their opening match at the ongoing NCF Women T20 Invitational tournament against Rwanda at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos on Monday, March 27, 2023.

Ghana, having won toss and electing to field first couldn’t stop the Rwandans consistent boundary scores and had to chase 159 runs, as Rwanda scored 158/3 in the first innings.

Ghana started with openers, Rashidatu Salia 6(24) and Miriam Eshun 4(12) but things didn’t go well for that partnership.

The batting order kept dropping after Miriam fell on the 4.3 over from Vumiliya’s ball. Vice-captain Rozabel Asumadu and Kate Awuah tried keeping the wickets after the 13th over and a neat partnership, managing 1 run per ball but the connection was cut out on the 16.1 over when Ishimwe bowled out Asumadu en route to her hat trick, limiting Ghana to 41/10 in 16.3 overs.

Rwanda won the game by 117 runs, while Henriette Ishimwe, who got a hat trick in the bowling figures to wrap of the game for her side was adjudged the player of the match. She took a total of 2.3-0-4-4 and scored 32(22), while team mate Sarah Uwera scored *60(61).

Speaking briefly after the game, Captain of Ghana’s Team, Rhyda Ofori Amanfo says, they will play the finals with Rwanda.

“We had some few technical problems and that led to our loss. We are here in a different way and all we know is, we will play Rwanda in the finals of this tournament”

Rwanda thus complete 2 wins against Ghana in the same tournament in 1 year. On Monday, March 28, 2022 at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Rwanda had an 81 runs victory over Ghana, also in their opening match after 135/9 and 54/9 in 14.2 overs result.

Ghana continues their quest to making a statement on Tuesday, March 28, at 13:50 GMT against Sierra Leone.

They are billed to play Cameroon on Wednesday, also at 13:50 GMT and then rivals Nigeria on Friday, March 31, 2023.

Ghana currently lies bottom with no point and -5.850.

The team and the whole Association are however still grateful to Price Water House Coopers (PwC), Underground Mining Alliance, Bel Aqua producers of ALKAPLUS mineral water and other benevolent individuals.

Host Nigeria however beat Sierra Leone in the morning by 6 wickets and also lie 2nd, while defending champions Rwanda occupy the first spot.
