Introduction
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all back to the 2022/2023 season of the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League (WPL).
Permit me to use this opportunity to thank officials of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the playing body and officials of the various teams, players, MAX TV, our friends from the media, and other stakeholders from the business and football community for their tremendous support, partnership and active participation since the launch of the 2022/2023 season in October 2022. As we begin the next phase of the league, we look forward to deepening and strengthening collaborations with you to make the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League a success.
Reason for Partnership with GFA & Fueling a World of Good
Malta Guinness firmly believes in creating a “Can-Do” World. It is based on this premise that we launched the World of Good campaign to help people feel energized to achieve their dreams and aspirations. Over the years, we have been strongly committed to championing diversity and inclusion, creating equal opportunities for women, and promoting the progressive portrayal of women in our business and in our society.
It is for this reason that last year we partnered with the GFA to support and throw more light on the Women’s Premier League. For decades, many sporting activities including football, have been male-dominated. Women have been discouraged from pursuing their sporting careers due to gender norms and misconceptions. Despite these challenges, there have been some progress toward gender equality in sports. The progress we have made since the start of the season will not have been possible without the unwavering support of several stakeholders, especially the media.
Awards & Recognitions – Player & Coach of the Month
In the past few months, we have seen the sheer brilliance, resilience, passion, exuberance, dedication and remarkable talents of these young women. We are proud of the hard work and exceptional skills they have exhibited and we look forward to what they have in store for us in these coming months.
At the start of the partnership, Malta Guinness made a commitment to establish a monthly awards for player of the month and coach of the month. We felt it was important to recognize and celebrate the coaches and players who exhibit outstanding performance. Every month, Malta Guinness will award the best-performing coaches and players. We believe recognizing them for their outstanding performance will go a long way to drive excellence and inspire a world of good.
We will like to use this opportunity to reward the coaches and players who showed sterling performance during the first phase of the season.
We will like to say Ayekoo to Coach Yusif Basigi of Hasaacas Ladies, Stella Nyamekye, player with Dreamz Ladies, Coach Joe Nana Adarkwah of Ampem Darkoa Ladies and Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah also of Ampem Darkoa Ladies for the outstanding leadership and performance they have shown so far.
We remain confident that as we go into the second phase of the league, this will inspire all of us to do more. We also hope to see more exciting play and results in the coming weeks.
This year, we have a lot of activities lined up. We believe with your continued support, we can work towards changing the narrative associated with women’s football, promote gender equality in sports, reignite the love for women’s football, and empower and energize these extraordinary girls to do more exploits in Ghana and beyond.
Our Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability
In line with our promise of creating a World of Good, we also launched a plastic collection drive on the sidelines of the season to champion sustainability and drive plastic waste recycling nationwide through community mobilization, engagements and partnerships. So far, the community-focused initiative has been held in Alogboshie, Kaase and Mallam- Gbawe. We look forward to furthering this agenda in the coming weeks and we hope that you can join us as we rid our country of plastic waste one community at a time.
Conclusion
As we watch the matches with thrill and excitement, let us be reminded of the values football teach – fostering unity, community and igniting passion. Most importantly, let’s be reminded that women are capable of achieving far more than we have been made to believe. We must unlearn some norms that place women at a disadvantage. Whether it is pursuing a career in sports, aviation, mechanical engineering, furthering their education etc., women and girls can equally achieve everything they set their minds to.
Let’s support them throughout the league, watch the matches and cheer them. Let us all work together to make Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League one of the most anticipated leagues in Ghana.
Thank you.
