Tema Youth began their quest for top-flight football with a convincing victory against Division One League newbies Golden Kick Sporting Club at the Accra Sports stadium this afternoon.
Goals from Jeremiah Akorful, Evans Osei Wusu and Denis Hutor were more than enough to hand the former Ghana Premier League outfit all three points on match day one of the new campaign.
Golden Kick endured a difficult pre-season prior to the start of their debut campaign in the second tier league as the Chorkor-based club suffered a chastening defeat to the senior men’s national team, Black Stars, while also losing to Newtown Youth FC and Tema Youth SC smelled blood in the opening stages and came as no surprise when they took advantage of the inexperience of their counterparts to break the deadlock.
Jeremiah Akorful gave the visitors the lead two minutes after the half hour mark before Golden Kick pegged back the Harbour Warriors six minutes later however eventual man-of-the-match winner Evans Osei Wusu restored the lead for Tema Youth three minutes before half time from the penalty spot.
With little to separate the two sides in the second stanza the results at the end of half time was bound to be the same at the end of the game however Dennis Hutor put the icing on the cake for Tema Youth in additional time to end any hopes of Golden Kick of avoiding defeat on match day one.
Up next for the Harbour Warriors will be a home game against Attram De Visser at their new home venue, Tema Mantse stadium, on match day two of the 2021-22 Division Two League.
The win means Tema Youth join a host of clubs in Zone Three to grab opening day victories and will hope this will be the beginning of greater things to come in the season which should eventually culminate in qualification to the elite division after finishing as runners-up to Accra Lions in a close contest last season.
