Today in Sports History: DK Poison wins Ghana’s first boxing title after beating Mexico’s Ruben Olivares
On September 20, 1975, which is exactly 48 years today David Kotei, popularly known as “DK Poison,” became Ghana’s first-ever world boxing champion.
DK Poison did so by capturing the WBC World featherweight title with a 15-round split decision win over Ruben Olivares at the forum in Inglewood, California, USA.
He was decorated with the highest honour of the land ‘The Order of Volta’ in 1975, following his heroics by the then Head of State of Ghana, General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong.
The Ghanaian defended the belt three times – he defeated David Sotelo, Flipper Uehara, and Shig Fukuyama.
Before unfortunately, he lost his belt to Danny Lopez via a unanimous decision on November 6, 1976, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
After achieving that feat, the likes of Azumah Nelson, Nana Yaw Konadu, Ike Quartey, Alfred Kotey, Joseph Agbeko, Joshua Clottey and Isaac Dogboe have all won World titles for Ghana.
